Ode To A Grecian Burned

Updated: May 30

The winner of this year’s Costa-Fortune / Whisky-McNightly Greek Translation Prize has been announced. It goes to University of Afpuddle Senior Research Associate Dr Rosetta Stone. The annual competition is a joint enterprise between the Dorset Hellenic Institute [Hinton Parva], the Whisky-McNightly Foundation [Bradpole] and Threadbone Mediterranean Coach Tours Ltd [Botherhampton].

Panel Chair: Dame Mary Borde-Wridged

According to panel chair Classics Professor Dame Mary Borde-Wridged*.  Dr Stone has done the world of Greek poetry an enormous service by rendering into “exquisitely nuanced and poetically expressive English” the hitherto untranslated Τιμωρία by 3rd century BC poet Θρυπεκδες Συρακώ.  She will receive a £25 Edna Local Shopping Voucher and 400 Threadbone Mediterranean Coach Tours Ltd road miles from Mrs Whisky-McNightly at a ceremony in the People’s Auditorium, Great Heaving later this month.

* Once famously described by Academic Women Monthly as a true buffonà [which is to say: “a woman with a not displeasing moustache”]

Τιμωρία by Θρυπεκδες Συρακώ has only previously appeared in an anthology curated by Richard Claverhouse Jebb*

* Sir Richard Claverhouse Jebb OM FBA FRSE  (27 August 1841 – 9 December 1905) was a British classical scholar and MP for Cambridge. To the best of our knowledge he rarely if ever visited Dorset and his work as well as his reputation clearly suffered as a result

The Poem in its original, transliterated and translated form can be downloaded from the Dorset Hellenic Institute worldwide interweb site [HERE].

Downloads from the site are free provided they are for educational use only. A hefty donation would be appreciated.
